Thailand in October 2026: free VIJIT light festival in Lamphun, Trang and Roi Et

TAT has launched VIJIT Thailand 2026: three free evening light festivals back to back - Lamphun 25 September - 4 October, Trang 2-11 October, Roi Et 9-18 October. Inside: show and fireworks schedule, venues on the map and how to get there from Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket.

Thailand in October 2026 is not only about beaches. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched VIJIT Thailand 2026: three free evening light festivals back to back in three cities. Lamphun in the north - 25 September to 4 October, Trang in the south - 2 to 11 October, Roi Et in the northeast - 9 to 18 October. The programme runs from 17:00 until late evening, admission is free. "Vijit" means "exquisite" in Thai. Each city gets around ten light spots: projections on temples and old walls, 3D mapping, lasers, mist, LED installations, drone shows and live performances. Lamphun's theme is the heritage of the ancient Hariphunchai kingdom, Trang's is nature and dugongs, Roi Et's is faith and the music of Isan. Lamphun, 25 September - 4 October, 17:00 to midnight. The venue is the old town: the route passes the main temple Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, the old gates and the Queen Chamadevi Monument. At Tha Nang Gate there are four light and sound shows every evening - at 19:00, 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00. Fireworks are added to the 20:00 show on 25, 26, 27 September and 2, 3, 4 October. At the Chamadevi Monument a cultural performance starts at 19:00. Trang, 2-11 October, 17:00 to 22:00. One venue - Somdet Phra Srinagarindra 95 Park, the big city park with a lake in the centre of Trang. Ten installations around the "magic island" in the middle of the water: dugongs, forest, flowers, a bridge of cultures. Bonus: on 10 October the vegetarian festival starts in Trang - the same one as in Phuket, with processions and vegan street food. The last two evenings of lights coincide with its start. Roi Et, 9-18 October, 17:00 to midnight. The venue is Bueng Phlan Chai lake right in the city centre, with an island and a tower. Opening on 9 October with fireworks at 19:30. Live music in the evenings of 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18 October, with a mor lam concert of Isan folk music on 17 October. How to get there: 1. Lamphun - 30 km from Chiang Mai airport, about 30 minutes by taxi; the train from Chiang Mai station takes 20-45 minutes. From Bangkok and Phuket - a direct flight to Chiang Mai. 2. Trang - has its own airport, flights from Bangkok with Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air, about an hour and a half. From Phuket - by road, about four and a half hours. 3. Roi Et - has its own airport, a daily Thai AirAsia flight from Don Mueang, about an hour and ten minutes. If you are in Pattaya, all three routes start at a Bangkok airport. A Pattaya - Bangkok transfer door to door costs from 1,300 baht per car. September and October are the end of the rainy season, evening downpours are normal. Bring a raincoat, the venues are open air. Check exact installation hours and rain changes to the programme with the TAT contact centre on 1672, they answer in English. Forward this news to friends travelling to Chiang Mai, Krabi or southern Thailand in October: Lamphun is half an hour from Chiang Mai, and Trang is on the road between Krabi and Hat Yai. Setting aside one evening for the festival is easier than hearing about it after it has ended.
