Alcohol in Thailand on October 26: a plan for a dry Monday in Pattaya
On October 26, Ok Phansa, 7-Eleven and cafes sell no alcohol all day. Here is a plan for Monday in Pattaya: a temple in the morning, an island by day, a quiet evening, and what to buy in advance.
Monday, October 26, 2026 is Ok Phansa, the last day of Buddhist Lent. From midnight to midnight, alcohol in Thailand is not sold at 7-Eleven, supermarkets, regular cafes or beach restaurants. In Pattaya you notice it right away: the beer fridges are locked and the waiter politely offers you a cola.
Since May 2025 the ban has exceptions: hotels, licensed clubs and bars in entertainment zones such as Walking Street are allowed to sell. Small beer bars without that licence often close for the day or serve soft drinks only. A seller who breaks the rule faces a fine of up to 10,000 baht and up to six months in jail, so there is no point in trying to talk them into it. Ok Phansa is not a public holiday: banks, immigration and shops work as usual. So it is an ordinary Monday, just without the bar. A great excuse to spend it somewhere a bar is not needed anyway.
Morning - at a temple. On Ok Phansa Thais come to temples dressed in white and bring food and flowers for the monks. The closest one to the centre is Wat Chai Mongkhon in South Pattaya. Tourists are welcome to watch, in clothes that cover shoulders and knees. The most beautiful morning alms-giving, Tak Bat Thewo, takes place the next day, Tuesday the 27th.
Daytime - on the water. Ferries and speedboats run on their normal schedule on Ok Phansa, but nobody will sell you a beer on board or at the beach cafes of Koh Larn that day. So pick a trip where the essentials are already included:
1. Koh Larn and Koh Sak in one day - runs every day, Monday included, 900 baht. Hotel pickup, a morning on Tien Beach, lunch on the island, then swimming and snorkelling on quiet Koh Sak after lunch.
2. Paradise Island - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 2,700 baht. A small island where the beach belongs to your group only: white sand, snorkelling, fishing with sashimi from the catch, lunch on the shore.
3. On your own - by ferry from Bali Hai Pier for 30 baht, about 45 minutes to Koh Larn.
If you want an island day with more adrenaline, go for Three Wonder Islands: parasailing, jet ski, a foam party and drinks all day, 2,000 baht. This tour runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so there is none on Monday the 26th. Book it for Saturday the 24th or Tuesday the 27th, when everything is back to normal.
The easiest way to the pier is by scooter: from the centre along South Pattaya it is a couple of kilometres. Scooter rentals start at 200 baht a day, with cars in the same catalogue if you travel as a group.
The weekend before Ok Phansa can be calm too. On Saturdays and Sundays there is the Chok Dee tour: Ban Don monastery an hour and a half from Pattaya, where monks give a two-hour massage with herbal compresses, followed by Wat Lahan Rai temple on the river in Rayong, 2,500 baht. The monastery's herbal sauna only works on weekends, so Sunday the 25th is a perfect fit.
Evening - dinner and a show. Hotel restaurants can serve wine with dinner that day. If you want a drink in your room or villa, buy everything on Sunday: since May 2026 shops sell alcohol from 11:00 to midnight with no afternoon break. Drinking your own at home is fine, the ban is on selling. Just do not bring your own to a regular cafe: they are not allowed to serve it that day.
