Ancient capital of Ayutthaya
Experiences comparable to a journey to ancient Angkor ...
Ayutthaya was the main city of the eponymous kingdom, which preceded the Siamese state. The city was built in 1350. Many scholars believe Ayutthaya was one of the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia. The architecture of this city is truly renowned for its luxury. According to local legends, most of the attractions were once covered in gold, but they were later looted. Due to frequent plundering and destruction, today you can see ruins of towers and city walls, destroyed palaces and temples. Nevertheless, Ayutthaya today is a modern city where ancient ruins blend well with new buildings. In the late 20th century, the historic center of Ayutthaya was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tour program:
Visit to Wat Yai Chaimongkol Monastery — an active XIV-century complex where monks still live. Here stands a huge bell tower stupa built in honor of King Nerasuan’s victory over the Burmese. From the platform at the top, panoramic views of the historical park open up;
Introduction to the photogenic relic of Ayutthaya — the stone head of Buddha entwined by the roots of the sacred Bodhi tree. This composition is located among the ruins of Wat Mahathat, a temple — the "Storeroom of the Great Relic," established in 1374. Its 43-meter prang served as a royal monastery. Our guide will tell the story of the unique "fusion" of nature and Buddhist relics;
Walk through the former royal chapel Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. Three large, bell-shaped chedis built to hold the remains of rulers became a symbol of Siam’s golden age. Once stood here a 16-meter Buddha statue, covered with hundreds of kilograms of gold, and ceremonies were held by monarchs where even monks were not allowed;
